The Motivating Belief that Led Me to The Goodness Web

Dear trusted friends and supporters of The Goodness Web,

Since starting at The Goodness Web early this summer, I’ve had the chance to speak with so many of you. I feel honored to be a part of this community, and to build opportunities for us to learn and connect around the issue of youth mental health. When I introduce myself, I always share the key bullet points of my background that prepared me for the role, but they do not get to my motivating belief about why The Goodness Web has exactly the right strategy. I want to share that story today.

Events and Learning Opportunities

As TGW grows, we are expanding the ways we can learn together and connect. Reach out to Jessie Shaw (jessie.shaw@thegoodnessweb.org) for additional information.

TGW Salon Series, feat. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, October 29. We are honored to host the U.S. Surgeon General for a discussion on innovation and progress to address the youth mental health crisis in New York City later this fall.

Community Briefing with Katya Hancock, November 13. We are committed to ensuring our generous community of supporters can learn directly from our grantees who are leading cutting-edge work with young people. In our first Community Briefing, Celine will interview Katya Hancock, Executive Director of Young Futures, TGW's most recent grantee partner. Her organization, funded in partnership with TGW, Melinda French Gates's Pivotal Ventures, and the Susan Crown Exchange, helps young people navigate a social media driven world and build real connections.

2025 Ambassador Retreat. TGW has grown rapidly thanks to generous families across the country who have helped us expand the Web and our collective giving capacity by hosting salons and bringing our work to their networks. We are hosting our first retreat to bring together our Accelerator-level families and individuals, who are committed to playing a leadership role in building our community and driving greater resources toward youth mental health. The event will be held in the Boston area and will be structured to include time for deeper learning on mental health philanthropy, reflecting on our collective role in advancing the field, and celebrating our progress. It will begin with a dinner, include a full working day, and conclude with a sendoff lunch. Reach out to our team to find out how you can become a TGW Accelerator family or individual.

Grantee Spotlight

TGW is proud to support these organizations, among others, with major grants.

The Jed Foundation (JED) just released an analysis of their impact on college student mental health over a decade (2013-2023). In that time, they have reached 5.6 million students on 444 college campuses. Schools that completed the program had a 25% reduction in suicide attempts. Beyond that, schools saw improvement in anxiety and depression scores, significant reductions in stigma around seeking mental health treatment, and improved ability for campus communities to identify students at risk. Read the full report here.

The Path Forward, Inseparable, and the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute played important roles in new regulations released by the Biden administration, intended to help millions of Americans gain better access to mental health care through their existing health insurance. The goal is to improve implementation of the 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act and ensure that mental health care is treated on a par with physical health care. The regulations reduce prior authorization requirements for treatment. Health plans can now be fined for restricting access by offering inadequate in-network options. Read more here.
