When Policy Is Aligned with Prevention: Supporting Youth through Trauma
Dear friends and supporters of The Goodness Web,
This past week I had the opportunity to attend Mindful Philanthropy's Accelerate convening and hear from one of the people who influenced my own professional trajectory, moving from the academic side of youth issues to a focus on mental health. Her talk reinforced my belief in the approach TGW takes in our giving.

Grantee Spotlight
TGW is proud to support these organizations, among others, with major grants.
The Jed Foundation (JED) and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) announced their plans to join forces in a landmark merger, bringing together two of the nation’s leading voices in mental health and suicide prevention. The combined organization will unite AFSP’s expansive national reach with JED’s deep focus on youth mental health, creating a powerhouse dedicated to supporting people across the full lifespan and expanding access to lifesaving care and resources. We’re inspired by what this partnership represents and look forward to the continued leadership JED brings to this critical work!
Koko shared results from a major randomized megastudy of brief digital mental health interventions, where its 5-minute online intervention for young people on social media was proven to be the most effective among 12 different interventions in a large randomized controlled trial (RCT). The study found that Koko’s Interactive Cognitive Reappraisal tool was one of only two single-session interventions to produce statistically significant reductions in depressive symptoms after four weeks, underscoring the promise of short, scalable supports for young people online.
The Rithm Project released Youth, AI, and the Relationships That Shape Them, new nationally representative research exploring how AI is shaping young people’s social and emotional lives. Drawing on a survey of more than 2,300 youth ages 13-24, the report identifies four distinct patterns of AI use, from productivity-focused use to deeply relational engagement, and finds that AI and human connection are closely intertwined, with the most intimate uses carrying both the greatest promise and the greatest risk. The research underscores that what protects young people most is not limiting technology, but ensuring they have strong, supportive relationships where they feel seen, safe, and able to be themselves.
Young Futures announced the Express Yourself Challenge Series, a $1.5M+ funding opportunity supporting nonprofits helping young people build confidence, belonging, and agency in a digitally shaped world. The challenge will fund 10+ organizations with grants ranging from $50,000 to $100,000, backing early-stage but tested youth-centered solutions that help young people navigate gendered pressures in digital life with more safety, self-expression, and support.
Inseparable, in partnership with Mental Health America, released
two new resources to help state policymakers navigate major Medicaid changes and protect access to mental health and substance use care. The guides offer practical support for state leaders implementing H.R. 1, including strategies for using data to identify exemptions and prevent eligible people from losing coverage.
